Behind the scenes, a team of producers, including Anoush Sadegh, along with professors Hiroshi Ishiguro and Kohei Ogawa from the University of Osaka and Telecommunication Research Institute, embarked on the ambitious task of training Erica to act.
“We wanted to create a story, and we wanted to do it in a revolutionary way,” shared the producers. “A robot doesn’t have life experiences, so we created this persona about those experiences, and we taught her how to act.”
Erica’s selection as the lead stemmed from her remarkable capabilities to seamlessly interact with humans, thanks to a fusion of cutting-edge technologies such as voice recognition, human tracking, and natural motion generation. “We found her to be the most capable of performing as an actor,” the team revealed. “We wanted to experiment to see if she would learn acting. And we started to train her, and she performs flawlessly and very well.”
